Dialogue: He Won't Wear a Ring!

Back when Will and Kate got married I remembered reading about why he isn't wearing a wedding band. I understood the reasons, I think a worldwide wedding lets everyone know he is off the market, and if it is a personal preference that they both agree with then why not? However, I knew for a fact that I wasn't okay with my husband not wearing a wedding band. Not because I am a jealous chick but because I always dreamed of putting a ring on a man's finger to symbolize our love and commitment. It is more a symbol then a stake on a claim. I really don't think women approaching my husband now without a ring would be any different than when he was my fiance without one. However, because of the meaning of the ring, I would be hurt if he refused to wear it. That was my thought. Then I put it away. Until recently. . .

I met a guy who said that when he gets married he will never wear a wedding band. When I asked why, he simply told me that he just didn't like it. There has to be more to it than that! So I did some research and found an interesting article from New York Magazine that discussed why men don't wear wedding bands. I found the reasons intriguing and even in my search I found discussions of women complaining that their husband won't wear a band. This led me to make this a discussion topic.

Do you think the reasons the article mentions are legit? Would you put up with your man not wearing a ring? Are you dealing with a man who doesn't want a ring? Are you frustrated or accept it? Are you okay with your fiance's preference and are in agreement together?

Pickle: Can You Trust Your Jeweler?

The Pickle: For all your ring maintenance and finding your wedding bands, you want to be sure to find a reputable jeweler.

The Solution: You have a few options

1. Recommendation from someone you know and trust. Especially if that person has worked with their jeweler for many of their pieces.

2. Take a look at the American Gem Society and/or Jewelers of America. You can locate reputable jewelers in your area that have met the standards of these organizations. The American Gem Society even provides a free Consumer Protection Kit. Jewelers of America has a site, Jewelry Information Center, where you can read up on jewelry shopping tips, and find information about all kinds of jewelry. Get more educated so that you can make educated decisions since wedding jewelry is expensive and holds so much meaning.

3. Get an independent appraisal of the value of your ring to insure you know the value of your ring before purchasing. You can also find certified appraisers at the American Gem Society website.

Pickle: Rings of Different Metals

The Pickle: Your engagement ring is one metal but the wedding band you want is a different metal.

The Solution: This really depends on the metal. You probably won't want a white gold engagement ring with a regular gold ring, unless it is what you want. It also depends on how much it bugs you or not. White Gold, Platinum, and Silver may look the same from a distance and no one will notice, but if you are easily annoyed with imperfection, the different metals may drive you crazy just knowing about it. However, you may be surprised. I have a white gold engagement and only wanted a white gold band to match it. However, the band I liked (and what my jeweler was going to give us for way less than retail value) was a platinum ring. We ended up getting the platinum ring.

Here are a couple options:

Try it On- You may notice a difference or you may not. You won't know until you can put the two rings together.

Custom Made- This may be a costlier option, but if a style band is one you love and you absolutely have to have it the same metal as your engagement ring, then this is a perfect option.
