Continuing with the Resource Interview Series where I feature finds of great and helpful websites and businesses: Allow me to introduce to you Something Borrowed NY. I am even more escatic to be featuring them today because today is the day that their business launches for all you brides!
Business Description:
“Something Borrowed NY” is the premiere online wedding shop that rents designer bridal
accessories at a fraction of the retail price! We know that after your wedding there is really no use for your tiara (unless you’re Kate Middleton), and that most of us don’t have the space to store yards of tulle and crystal baubles. We’re modern women who love fashion and aspire to wear gorgeous things on our special day. But we don’t necessarily value the possession of a one-time wear item. Partnering with top designers, we’ve curated a special collection of veils, tiaras, headpieces and jewelry to “frost yourself” with for your special day. Any minor damages are covered (please, no red velvet cake fights) and after you’re done, just ship it back to us and we’ll clean and preserve it for the next savvy bride!
- How did you come to the idea to start Something Borrowed NY? What was the inspiration behind it all?
The idea for Something Borrowed NY has been a long-time coming. Being the youngest of 4 girls, I’ve helped my three older sisters plan their fabulous New York weddings. Being less “obsessed with the dress” than myself, the three of them always wondered why they couldn’t just rent their dress like their husbands rented their tuxes. To them, the dress and the accessories were the LAST thing they wanted to spend their money on, knowing they could only wear it once. After their weddings, they each tried to sell their dresses online, but had zero success. After watching my sister’s gown hang in the hallway of her 400 sq. ft apartment for 3 years (it’s still there) – I decided to enlist the help of my “Wedding Diva Fashionista” (Miss H.) and began to formulate our plan.
2. What designers can brides expect to find?
Right now we’re only offering accessories on our website and we’re working with some of the top professionals in the industry including, Enchanted Atelier, Justine M. Couture and Amanda Pearl. As we gain more customer feedback (feel free to e-mail us!) we’d love to add more designers and cater to our brides’ wants and needs.

3. Do you plan to take it nationwide? Can people rent from online and delivery someday?
Yes! We would love to open a showroom in New York City someday – but for now, we’re renting straight from our site. We’ll be up and running by the end of July with a selection of beautiful products for you all!
4. What is your favorite source for finding wedding inspiration?
Oh there are just too many to quote! Basically, every time I find a blog I dump it into my google reader and fawn over gorgeous details. I’m uber excited to see these new wedding inspiration aggregator sites that are popping up (bridesview.com, lover.ly etc.) I think it’ll be amazing to see how these sites can monopolize on the popularity of pintrest and polyvore with a specific bridal twist!
5. What is your favorite thing about weddings?
B & H have very different wedding aesthetics. B leans more towards the small quirky DIY details and H leans more towards anything sparkly and delicious (cupcake obsession anyone?) – but we both can agree that we love ORIGINIALITY in the little details. It totally makes the difference.
6. What is your one piece of advice to brides for wedding accessories and/or general advice?
On your special day, make sure that your accessories compliment your dress, but don’t detract. If you have an ornate gown with tons of embellishment, tone it down for your accessories. If your dress is very simple, play up the accessories with something more elaborate. Also, don’t forget that you can style yourself differently for your ceremony and reception. Removing the veil and adding a feathered or sparkly piece could change the tone of your look for your party!
